Hey I'm living in Perth (WA) at the moment and I'm keen on studying in the UK. I'm in my final year of high school, TEE coming up in November. Do you have any more tips on how I should apply for my visa (I want to live in the UK for maybe 5+ plus). My Mother is English, I have an Australian passport as well as an English passport and I have lived in the UK from 1997 to 2001. I intend to live maybe with my friends, and work in the UK to pay my uni debts. Can you give my anymore tips or processes I will have to go through, or even if you know of any ways that will make it cheaper?
Muchly appreciated

Monika,

My university provided me with a list of exchange partners in the UK. I made a list of the subjects that I needed to take in order to complete my degree in time. I then went through the subject catalogs of all the partners, and ranked them on compatibility with my degree, it. the one that offered the most equivalent subjects to the least. This ensured that I'd be able to gain credit for the subjects I took there.

That was the main criteria really. When it got down to just a few choices, the real possibilities for my degree, I researched the universities and cities they were located in. In hindsight, I really should have taken more notice of their academic standing - from resources such as http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/education/good_university_guide/ Also, I found that the descriptions of subjects in the catalog that I used to select them has been inaccurate, and sometimes completely wrong. This means I could be denied credit and have to take them back home again.

I’m sure that I’m the only normal person here. Why would I think so? Because no one normal would have written anything like posts below on this kind of website.

Good question Fred. It's probably harder in two ways.

Firstly, the study abroad program I am on only transfers credit based on pass/fail. This basically means that there is no difference between receiving 40% and 90% for me. It sounds cool, but it is quite hard to stay focused and motivated on study when the main reason for studying, good grades, is removed.

Secondly, there are gaps in the content that need filling. Just how much work you put into understanding the content is up to you, but it could involve quite a bit more to be on the same level as the other students. That being said, only work from the semester should be assessed. Careful selection of subject would ensure no major problem in the work involved.

No major differences in the lectures. My subjects are quite varied about notes, some provide juicy handouts while others are quite barren. Maths on the other hand, has a lot of rushed note taking - I'm used to bound books back home with all the theory in, with space for examples that are covered in class. Lecture theaters are made for giants, with huge gaps between the seat and desk. Lectures start at 5mins past the hour, finish at 5mins to. Though some schools decide to change this, so should you take classes from multiple schools this could pose a problem. Haha, I miss the logic of uni-wide 50mins classes starting on the hour.

Hope this helps, any more questions (from anyone!) just ask :)

That is interesting - so do you think you need to work harder as an international students to "fill the gaps" as it were? Also, are there many differences between your lectures back home and in the UK?
