ok ok Im there
Posted on September 7th, 2008 by Juan Ortiz-Apuyok. sorry i’ve been absent for a few days. the crazyness of packing, leaving, flying, arriving was almost a bit too much for me. So, I’m finally here. Glasgow!. Well, its a lot how I imagined it to be. Except for the weather which has actually been nice (I even got a few sporadic periods of sunshine!). Things have gone relatively smooth. I arrived Friday morning with more luggage than I can possibly carry but I managed to throw everytthing onto a cart and drag accross Glasgow International Airport. Customs & Immigration went completely smooth, I was really pleased & happpy. No weird questions or hassles.
so far I have enjoyed the city very much. its a fairly handsome city with lots of shops & weird/interesting stores. one of the things that has striken me the most is that you dont see a lot of people in the streets. but it might just be that i’ve done that at odd time and/or the weekend.
These nights I’ve been staying at the Glasgow Hostel while I look for a flat. Great place really. Friendly staff & convenient facilities. This being said though, CANNOT wait until I find my own place. You cant really beat having you own room. I also learned that the single most important thing to bring to a hostel is: EARPLUGS!. Please if you dont know this, never forget. Because you can either get the super-loud snoring-person or the stay-up-late-and-make-lots-of-noise-person or the laugh-while-sleeping person (which is really, really freaky).
Ok, well, all in all, I just wanted to drop a few lines to say how things are going. Im slowly adapting to the change. Although I really miss my friends & my ladyfriend Amelie, I try to take things day by day.
Ok ok greetings from glasgow & I will write a bit more soon. until then,
juan

Hi
I am an American Citizen participating in a summer study program in a few weeks in London.
I will have a bank statement from the day before I arrive in London and also for the past month – showing my deposit. I realize the immigration requirement for Student Visitors is to have funds equivalent to 500 pounds per month of stay. I am staying for two months = that equates 1000 pounds = 1650 dollars. My account 28 days before my entry shows a balance of about 1,300 – 1400 dollars. My subsequent deposits of 1,500 and 3,000 dollars each were made less than 28 days before my arrival (17 days before in the case of the first, 11 days in the case of the latter)
Will I be denied entry for this? I don’t know what your experiences were with the immigration – how strict they were etc. I am kind of freaking out right now that I will be sent back… so anything would be great.

We’ve put together a video for the UKBA about student visa application requirements. Do you know anyone who may find it useful? If so, please pass it on

Hey Juan,
I am glad to know you are from Costa Rica since my husband is doing a project on Costa Rica as part of his MBA course at Strathclyde. If you get this email in time, we hope to sorta speak with you and get as few facts about Costa Rica clarified.
Cheers,
Rinki

I spent christmas in Glasgow a couple of years back, the streets were packed then.
I guess my favourite place was the Cineworld tower in town, you can see for miles from the top floor! Almost more interesting then the film!

Hi, my name is Mikaela Christensen.
I am 21 years old and I’m from Sweden. Im planning to study here in England next year, and I realised I have to take an english test of some sort before I can start studying. Is this the CAE test?
I was also wondering weather you know anywhere I can go to convert my swedish grades into the english system?
I would be thankful for your help!

Its good to see such a great Study in Uk blog. And this blog information is very informative. Yes weather is very difficult in Glasgow.
@ Mikaela >>> Thank you for your question. Mikaela welcome to England. Yes you can arrange a English test. Make a preparation for IELTS exam. It would be great if you do it. Or you can do any other Normal English course as well.
You want to convert your swedish study to Uk study for that you have to contact with your institution, where you want to study. Even I have a blog you can take look >>> http://www.thelondonstudy.com
Thank You

This is so interesting, I just started a similar blog to record an international student’s experiences in Uk. I didn’t even know this existed. Interesting!
